SAT 5TH SEPT (STH ISLAND FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP)

FT: 2-2; AET: 3-3; LOSS 6-7 penalties v Dunedin Technical

Woolston Technical opened the scoring in what was an action packed game when Jamie Smith fired home after seven minutes to end a flowing more. Dunedin Technical's Aaron Burgess had a great chance to level just before the break but his headed shot went wide. The Christchurch side increased their lead when Russel Kamo tapped home after a shot from Ryan Faichnie was blocked by keeper Cameron Burns. Mike Fridge, the visiting coach then pushed Blair Scoullar into a more attacking roll which saw Dunedin finish strongly with Andy Coburn scoring the first of his two goals after 72 minutes. Burgess then had another header saved by James Levey, playing for an injured Tom Batty, with Coburn putting the game into extra time when scoring from a corner with seven minutes to play. Kamo then headed Woolston back in front with Levey then saving well from a freekick with burns then turning a shot from Faichnie away from a corning. In the second period of sixteen year substitute Michael Still scored against the run of play to end the scoring and send the game into a penalty shot out. Both sides converted their first five spot kicks to send the contest into sudden death. Both sides slotted their sixth kick with Joe Murray twice having his shoot saved with George Milne then scoring to put Dunedin Technical in to the final.

 

SAT 29TH AUG (ENGLISH CUP SEMi FINAL): 0-3 LOSS v Nomads

Nomads who finished fourth in the Matson's PFL defended well and with the PFL champion's Woolston Technical who had not lost in Christchurch this season coming into the game, had an off day in front of the goal it was the cup holder's who processed into the final. In a tight opening half Nomads took the lead after Brendon Snelling scored from the penalty spot after a team mate was brought down in a half which Tech had enough chances to go to the break in front. Into the second half a Nomads continued with their good defensive work and the lack of finishing keep Tech scoreless for just the fifth time this season. As Tech pushed men forward in search of an equalising goal Alec Beresford doubled Nomads lead with Tom Webby wrapping up the game when scoring in the final few minutes.

 

SAT 22ND AUG (MPL): 1-0 WIN v Halswell

Woolston Technical locked away another trophy when holding out Halswell to maintain their season long unbeaten home record to retain the Hurley Challenge Shield over the summer break. Technical, who created the better scoring chances in the opening half looked set to go to the break scoreless when Luica Maggio stepped up to score his debut PFL goal in the 45 minute. The second half failed to reach any great heights with Tech now looking for further success as they now contest the Donnithorne Simms Mitsubishi English Cup and SIFC semi-finals over the next two weeks.

 

SUN 16TH AUG (MPL); 0-2 LOSS v Nelson Suburbs

Nelson Suburbs moved off the bottom of the Matson's Premier Football League when inflicting the first defeat on Matson's Premier Football League champions Woolston Technical, 2 - 0 on Sunday. This was their catch up game which took two attempts to be completed after surface flooding at Saxton Oval saw Saturday's game abandoned, due to player's safety at half time with Suburbs leading 1 - 0.

 

Sunday's game took place on a different pitch with Nelson Suburbs starting strongly against Woolston Technical and took the lead after 13 minutes when Joel Wiechern scored. Technical, who had to fly two players north on Sunday morning to replace an injured Ryan Faichnie with Jamie Smith having to return to Christchurch in Saturday evening, missed a penalty with Jordan Maxwell when doubling the lead after 33 minutes. Technical came back into the game in the game half but for the third time, in three different competitions this season could not score in Nelson. Suburbs finished the game with just 10 men after Simon Gatward-Smith received a second yellow card. The result ended Tech's twelve match unbeaten run and lifted Suburbs off the bottom at the expense of Ferrymead Bays. 

 

SAT 8TH AUG (LEAGUE CUP FINAL); 4-2 WIN v Burnside

Woolston Technical added to their silverware collection when they claimed the Matson's Premier Football League Cup when defeating Burnside 4 - 2 in the final at English Park on Sunday. This goes along with their recently won Matson's Premier Football League title, the McFarlane Cup - for the last Christchurch club in Chatham Cup and also currently hold the Hurley Challenge Shield.


Woolston Technical went down to an early goal by Nick Durham from a Burnside free-kick, but then struck back with a brilliant strike by Tom Lancaster after 21 minutes. A slick Tech move late in the first half, involving Matt Thomas and Tom Cairns ended with Russel Kamo scoring. After the break Tech further increased their lead when defender Nick Wortelboer started a flowing move which saw Ryan Faichnie float in a great cross in from the right which was nodded down by the far post to Wortelboer with the defender blasting the ball home. Burnside then went a player down when Dan Ede was shown a straight red card for a studs up challenge but this saw Burnside have one of their better periods in the game. The lead was reduced to just one goal when Greg Feutz hit the post but he made no mistake with the rebound. With six minutes remaining Kamo's second goal ensured Technical would claim the Matson's league / cup double.

 

SAT 1ST AUG (MPL & HURLEY SHIELD DEFENCE); 0-0 DRAW v Ferrymead Bays

It was not a great performance that brought Woolston Technical the point they needed to add their name to the PFL trophy when drawing with Ferrymead Bay with the game also being a Hurley challenge Shield game. "It certainly was not our best game of the season and to be fair Bays would be disappointed that they only picked up a point", said Tech coach, Keith Braithwaite, was the in charge of Technical when they last won a senior title, the Southern League in 1994. Bays came into the game needing points and right from the opening whistle had the Tech defense on the back foot and went close after 16 minutes when a Dan Terris headed on to the post from a corner. Hue Frame when had several chances before the break. Russel Kamo had Tech's best change in the second half but his shot went straight Bay keeper, Richard Aymes. Batrum Suri had a strong game for Bays whether floating in corner balls or also looking dangerous with ball at feet in Tech's goal area. 

 

SAT 25TH JUL (ENGLISH CUP): 1-0 WIN v Western

It was not a goal feast at Garrick Park between Woolston Technical and Western. Technical were without several of their usual starting eleven and with Western failing to make the most of their chances both sides went to the break scoreless. Tech started strongly in the second half with a shot from Joe Murray being deflected just over the bar for a corner. From a corner four minutes later scored what proved to be the winning goal with a Ryan Faichnie corner headed goal ward by James Price with Jamie Smith then nodding the ball home from close range.

 

SAT 18TH JUL (MPL): 3-1 WIN v Burnside at Burnside Park

In the title decider between Woolston Technical and Burnside there were early half chances to either side with both keepers blocking shots. Technical dominated the midfield and took control of the game just before the break when scoring twice in the space of two minutes. The first came from a Tom Lancaster corner which was blocked in the line three times in a matter of seconds before James Price headed the ball home. Lancaster then showed his class when cutting in from the right touch line and unleashed an unstoppable shot with his left foot from the edge of the goal area. Surprisingly after the break Burnside continued to play the long ball game which had hardly troubled Tech in the first half, and another quality strike by Lancaster on the hour saw Technical wrap a firm hand around the Matson's trophy. A minute later only the woodwork saved Burnside from going further behind to a Russel Kamo shot with Stu Kelly then pulling a goal back to give the scoreline some respect. Even when Technical went a man down after Matt Thomas received a second yellow card. Burnside never seriously threaten the Tech goal with their best chance coming when a header from Hunter Galletly went wide late in the game.

 

 

SAT 11TH JUL (MPL): 1-0 WIN v Nomads at Garrick Park

In a tight game Woolston Technical maintained their unbeaten run over Nomads. Tech had the better of the scoring chances in the opening half but the Nomads defence were equal to the task, both sides went to the break scoreless. Technical had a penalty call turned down after Russel Kamo was bundle over immediately after play resumed and less than a minute later Tech went ahead when a great delivery from the right by Ryan Faichnie found Matt Thomas unmarked who found the far corner of the net with a right foot shot. The remainder of the play continued to be tight however Nomads never created a serious chance and late in the game their keeper was lucky just to receive a yellow card after picking up the ball outside the area under pressure from Tom Cairns.

 

SUN 28TH JUNE (CHATHAM CUP RD of 16): 0-2 LOSS v Nelson Suburbs at Saxton Fields

On Sunday in a game that could have gone either way, Nelson Suburbs ended Woolston's Chatham Cup hopes when winning 2 - nil. A strong wind blowing across Saxton Field make it difficult for either side to produced flowing football with both sides turning as the break scoreless. The game turned when Sam Ayers was upended by a Technical defender with referee Mike Lindsay pointing to the spot in the 68 minutes, with Brazilian Eduardo Fernandas firing Suburbs into the lead. Ten minutes later Jordan Maxwell headed home from a corner to end the scoring. After the game Suburbs coach, John Brydon, was happy with the result. "It was a bit of a strange game due to the wind. The longer it went without a goal the more confident our players became", stated Brydon. "The penalty could have gone either way from were I was sitting but you take them if they are given", added Brydon.

 

SAT 20TH JUNE (MPL RD 9): 5-2 WIN v Western at Walter Park

Woolston Technical cut loose in the second half against Western which saw five goals coming in a hectic eight minute spell. Technical took an early lead when Ryan Faichnie scored from close range which turned out to be the only goal of the half. In what was was a turning point, straight after the break Alex Pac broke clear for Western but only found the side netting, and with a  resulting goal kick Technical doubled their lead when Joe Murray scored with a well taken strike. Murray then put his side three up before Ben Hughes was allowed to break clear and pull a goal back for Western. Two minutes later Russel Kamo restored Technical's three goal lead only for Hughes to find the back of the net with a good finish. Three minutes later Murray completed his hat-trick. Before this game Western had only conceded five goals in their previous eight games.

 

SAT 13TH JUNE (CHATHAM CUP): 1-0 WIN v Christchurch United at QE2

Woolston Technical had most of the play in the first half against Christchurch United who had to thank their keeper, Robbie Barraclough who three times turned the ball away for corners as Tech look set to break the deadlock. The Technical front runners continued to test the nuggety United defense with Roman Bankowski and Danny Attwell in the thick of the action. Luck was also on United's sides as an Adam Cowen goal was ruled out for offside and then Matt Thomas hit the post. Such was Technical's dominance that United’s best chance came after 83 minutes when Tom Batty had to save a freekick from Ryan Mahalm.  All the Technical pressure finally counted when Cowen celebrated his nineteenth birthday when heading home from a corner after 102 minutes. Final Score 1-0 to Tech.

 

SAT 6TH JUNE: 0-0 DRAW v Christchurch United at Garrick

For the first time this season Woolston Technical were kept scoreless by Christchurch United in a clash which was also a Hurley Challenge Shield game with the draw enough for holders Technical to retain the Shield. Weather conditions did not help both teams play flowing football with Russel Kamo having several half chances for Tech in the opening half. United keeper, Robbie Barraclough was good under the high ball cutting out several dangerous crosses after the break. Both teams now face each other in the Chatham Cup next Saturday with United having the home advantage.


Mon, 1ST JUNE (CHATHAM CUP): 3-1 WIN v Coastal Spirit

Just four teams from the Mainland region are left in this years Chatham Cup after games played on Queen’s Birthday Monday, with Christchurch United, Ferrymead Bay, Nelson Suburbs and Woolston Technical now joining 28 other hopeful clubs that will go into the hat for the next round draw that will be conducted by New Zealand Football.
 
Woolston Technical took out the big clash with Coastal Spirit with the Matson PFL leaders winning 3 - 1 over the Robbie’s Division 1 frontrunners. Russel Kamo opened the scoring with a shot first hitting the post only to rebound back to Kamo and go in off off Kamo's chest. Tom Lancaster increased Tech's lead after the break with Adam Cowen putting Tech three up from the penalty spot. Coastal Spirit reduced the margin when fifteen year old Danny Palenthorpe raced on to a cross in the 66 minute.

 

Sat 30TH MAY (MPL RD 7): 1-0 WIN v Nelson Suburbs at Garrick Park

Woolston Technical and Nelson Suburbs played out a very competitive game at Garrick Park. Both sides had early half chances before a slick move with Tom Lancaster tapping home by the far post against his old side putting Tech in front. Tech then hit the post before the break. Nelson keeper Eddie Newman was in top form meaning the home side could not add a second goal with Technical keeper, Tom Batty down early to block Paul Dirou early in the second half, which turned out to be Nelson’s best chance of the game. Suburbs finished the game with nine players after Gibson Daudau received a second yellow card midway through the second half and Billy Scott was shown a straight red card in the final minute of play.

 

Sat 23RD MAY (Championship Cup RD 3): CANCELLED v Halswell, at Garrick Park

 

Tues 19th MAY (ENGLISH CUP): 14-0 WIN v University

 

Sat 16TH MAY (CHATHAM CUP): 2-0 WIN v Halswell, at Garrick Park

In a somewhat scrappy game, Tech took the lead through a Joe Murray goal with Matt Thomas adding the second with ten minutes remaining; but a win is a win in cup competition.

 

Sat 9TH MAY (MPL RD 6): 3-2 WIN v Ferrymead Bays, at Barnett Park

It was a soggy Barnet Park that greeted the top two sides as Tech started the better against Ferrymead Bays. However it was Bays that scored the only goal of the opening half when Hue Frame raced on to a great through ball and made no mistake with his fourth goal in the league. Tom Lancaster locked the scores up after being set up by Matt Thomas with Dan Terris then heading Bays back into play after 77 minutes. Just when it looked like Tech's unbeaten run was going to end, Russell Kamo struck the first of his two goals in the final seven minutes to level and then added a cracking second which was a worthy winner with time almost up on the clock.

 

Sat 2ND MAY: (MPL RD 5); 2-0 WIN v Burnside, at Garrick Park

Woolston Technical were too good for Burnside with Tech having the ball over their goal line in the first half twice, only to have match officals rule the goals out, and James Cairns thundering a shot onto the crossbar from 25 metres out. The second half started with Burnside's Dan Ede pushing a shot wide and almost immediately Joe Murray scored to put the Hurley Challenge Shield holding in front. Brian Brown, the Burnside keeper, then pulled off a good save to deny Tom Lancaster a goal with Tech adding a second when Adam Cowen headed home with ten minutes remaining.

 

SAT 25TH APRIL (Championship Cup RD 2): 3-0 WIN v Ferrmead Bays, at Garrick Park

On Saturday Woolston proved to be too strong for Bays with age group international, Adam Cowan opening the scoring with a volley after eighteen minutes before a double strike from Russell Kamo in the second half took the game away from Bays.

 

 

SAT 18TH APRIL (MPL RD 4): 2-0 WIN v Nomads, Tullett Park

Woolston Tech started the stronger against Nomads, and was rewarded early after just eight minutes when Russell Kamo picked out Tommy Lancaster with a great cross with the current Mainland Player of the Year crashing the ball home on the volley. Nomads had their chances but suffered in the finishing area. Nomads went further behind early in the second half when a cross from the left turned into their own net by defender Ryan Batty. Tech looked the more likely to add to the scoreline and played out the final nine minutes after James Price was shown the red card for a clumsy tackle.

 

SAT 11TH APRIL (MPL RD 3): 4-0 WIN v Halswell, Halswell Domain

In the shortest tenure of the Hurley Challenge Shield Halswell had to hand over the trophy to Woolston Technical a week after they lifted it off Nomads. Two first half goals to Matt Thomas and Russell Kamo had Halswell's back to the wall with Technical then adding to the score line with goals to Joe Murray and a second to Kamo late in the game with Kamo heading the Golden Boot race with three goals.

SAT 4TH APRIL (MPL RD 2): 2-2 DRAW v Western, Garrick Park

Down 1-0 at halftime to a penalty, Tech snatched an equaliser in a goalmouth scramble mid-way through the second half. A good Western goal (nice turn and shot from edge of the box) against the run of play had the Western boys thinking the game was won. However they didn't count on the famous Tech fighting spirit and the Tech lads pressed home and got the point, quite deserved given the amount of possession.

 

SUN 29TH MARCH (CHAMPIONSHIP CUP RD 1): 0-1 LOSS to Nelson Suburbs, at Saxton Fields

At Saxton Oval on Sunday the game could have gone either way with Nelson and Technical going to the break scoreless. Late in the game Nelson’s new Solomon Island central defender, Hadisi Aengari, headed home from a corner. Minutes later Nelson keeper Eddie Newman pulled off a brilliant reflex save to deny Tom Cairns a goal and Technical a share of the points.

 

SAT 21ST MARCH (MPL RD 1): 3-3 DRAW v Chch Utd, at Ascot Green

Christchurch United marked their return to the MPL when drawing 3 all with Woolston Technical. Technical raced out to an early lead through goals to Ryan Faichnie and Joe Murray before Michael Fifii and Steve Hill netted to lock the scored up at the break. Faichnie then put Tech back when scoring again with Daniel Stridling equalizing late in the game.

Semi Final: Woolston Technical 3, Ferrymead Bays 3 (after extra time); Tec won 3-2 on penalties

Woolston Technical won all 3 group games to top Group B.
