2009 Match Reports

16th May: Woolston Technical 3, Parklands 2

We travelled away to Parklands Reserve for a bottom of the table clash.  A few changes to the starting line-up saw Zhao playing in the centre of midfield as the anchor man, and Rob moving to play as the lone striker. We grabbed the first goal with a well worked team move.  The ball was won in midfield and a few crisp passes saw Rob pulling it back from the back post for Gareth (Fester) to tap in.  Parklands equalised soon after when their striker found himself through on goal and calmly finding the corner.  A controversial referee decision gave the home team a penalty and the opportunity to take the lead but the penalty taker lost his cool and blazed the ball over the bar.  Tempers were beginning to flair at this stage as both teams were trying to take advantage of an indecisive ref,  but we did well to stay focused and went in at half time 1-1.

The 2nd half was fairly one-sided, with Parklands playing a high defensive line which made them vulnerable to the through ball.  After numerous chances to take the lead we finally went ahead.  Carl (who was fresh off the bench) put Rob through on goal, and he side footed past the keeper’s near post.  We then went on to miss yet more chances with their keeper making several saves and the upright being hit twice.
We went 3-1 up mid-way through the half.  Gareth hit an inswinging corner and Grant rose above the defence to head home.  A goal back from the home side created a tense finish but we hung on the game ended 3-2. A good, much needed, result in the end although it could have been much more comfortable had we taken all the chances which we created.

9th May: Woolston Technical  1, Burnside A 3
It was a wet one at Garrick Park and with the 1st team away from home, we were treated to the pick of the pitches against a Burnside A team who were unbeaten in the league so far this season.

We went a goal behind midway through the first half after a few over eager tackles missed their target and in the slippery conditions the opposition player managed to easily skip past a few players before finding the back of the net.  We equalised about 10 minutes before half time with a well worked set piece.  Gee floated a free kick over to the back post, where Rob headed it back into the danger zone and Grant finished it off with a nicely timed header into the far corner.   The 1st half performance from the home team was good, with solid defending and good hassle in midfield.  The only thing lacking was chances created and we only really looked dangerous on the counter attack and from set pieces.

We fancied our chances in the 2nd half and seemed to be containing the opposition well, until a hopeful effort from the edge of the box from the opposing winger slipped through the keeper’s fingers and found it’s way into the back of the net.  Then a mix up between defender and keeper saw us go 3-1 down thanks to an own goal from Zhao.  The scoreline didn’t really reflect the hard work we had done, but it was probably a fair result due to the lack of goalscoring chances we created.

2nd May: Woolston Technical 1, Hornby 4

Well we travelled away to Hornby hoping for our first league win of the season! and that's all we had 'HOPE'. We lost the game 4-1 with Dean Smith stabbing in a re-bound for his 3rd of the season. If you want to know about Hornbys goals please read earlier match reports and you'll get the jist. The only positive of the game is that we did create chances! but we should not need to score 5 to win a game. Nathan did make his 1st save of the season, with a late penalty save. well done

25th April: Woolston Technical 2, Avon 2

We hosted Avon at home on saturday. We were on a high as a result of last weeks win,  but the side that played last week failed to show up this week.  Once again the first 20 minutes was abysmal. We found ourselves 1- 0 down again with another mistake, but somehow we stole a goal back. A hopeful ball over the top from Rob was misjudged by the Avon keeper,  leaving Dean to nod it in on the line. Then with 2 or 3 minutes left of the 1st half, Grant (who earlier in the week became a father for the 1st time) bundled the ball over the line from close range.  The 2nd half began and within the 1st 10 minutes the scores were level. A corner from the left hand side gave a Avon player a free header at the back post, he put the ball and the keeper in the back of the net. thanks ref.  Then after 15 minutes came a moment that will stay in the minds of all the players: Amos who had been the player of the season to date, went in for a 50 50 and came out with a broken Tib and Fib.  We then played the last 30 mins with ten players. the defence were outstanding for that time but the gut feeling is points dropped again.

18th April: Woolston Technical 4, Burnside 1

Saturday came and of we went to Avonside park. There we played top of the table Burnside in our first cup pool game of the year. Due to a few regulars missing from training the new manager left out some names who would normally start.  The game started quite even with both sides sharing possession. As the half continued past the 20 minute mark the score remained 0 0, but a few half chances were coming our way. Our 1st goal came on the half hour mark. Some good work down the right from Dean resulted in a cross and 5' 5" Gif scored his 2nd header of the season.  Gif followed this up 5 mins later with his 2nd of the game, a neat back heal and turn left Burnsides defence standing and Gif cooly sloted the ball home. 2-0 ht. Woolston firmly in control.

The 2nd half started but we didn't, we found our selfs pened in our box for about 15mins and strugling to put 2 passes together. Changers were made and Rob was moved from centre mid to centre forward. As a result we started passing the ball more and the 1st half confidence returned. the 3rd goal came as a releif as Rob ran on to a long ball of our own. He carmly rounded the keeper and tucked the ball away.  Burnside contiued to fight but we held strong. This was untill Reuben (aka Evan, Mosses, Jesus) pulled out 'the hand of God' in our box (Tui moment, 'The sun was in my eye's!!'). Burnside put the spot kick away.
Any hopes of a Burnside fight back were exstiguished moments later when the througt ball from local hero Painter put Rob In on goal for his 2nd. Multipul chances came our way in the last 5mins with Reuben hiting the angle of the frame after some fine 1 touch passing. First win well deseved.

11th April: Woolston Technical 3, Burnside B 3

After winning the league last year we won the right to play in a higher league!!! Not the case!!! this burnside team also went up after finishing at least 4th  so what going on there then????   Well its fair to say we don't see eye to eye with this side after last years controversial last minute penalty - Game Time!!!
With a new manager and captain some changes were made and people were swapped around slightly. Sadly the way we started the match didn't change from last weeks start. We were 2-0 down with only 20 mins on the clock, but this week we were holding on to the ball and passing well. Burnside carried on causing trouble with the long ball but we held them off. A quickly taken short corner allowed Amos to cross the ball to the back post for Gifford to get his first goal of the season.  We carried on playing well and with 5 minutes of the first half remaining Gareth Painter latched onto the ball and went past two defenders and beat the keeper to make it 2-2.
At half time some positive words of encouragement were made and the team remained unchanged. We carried on playing well and with 20 minutes to go Rob Willems scored to put us in the lead 3-2.  A few minutes later another chance fell Woolston way but we failed to capitalise.  The keeper picked the ball up, kicked it up field and a mix up between keeper and defender saw Woolston score an own goal.
A much improved display should have resulted in 3 points.

4th April: Woolston Technical 3, Western 6
After last season’s promotion,  the new campaign came crashing to earth with a 6 – 3 defeat at home to Western.  The squad had a mixture of last year’s players ,together with several newcomers , and we certainly played like a team of strangers. The half time whistle came as a relief with Woolston being overrun 4 – 1 ,(4-0 after 20mins)but after some sharp words among the team , Dean Smith who had his first effort  saved ,followed up to chip the keeper to make it 4 – 1 , and when Gareth Painter was brought down by a defender ,they had a great chance to get back into the game , but Grant Longden blazed the penalty over the bar  and the miss was hard to take. In the second half Western went straight to the Woolston end and another mix up between the defence left the Western striker clear to make the score 5-1 . A long range effort from Gareth Painter bought the score to 5—2 , but another mix up  made it 6-2 , Gareth Painter got his 2nd late on 6-3 and the Western side ran out worthy winners .
A total lack of communication and defensive frailties left a disorganized Woolston team with plenty to sort out before next week’s game .
